Pledge of Allegiance of the United States

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Section 4 of the Flag Code states:

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute."

DAY 26 - DAILY PRAYER (HELP US TO OBEY YOUR FIRST COMMANDMENT) - JUNE 19, 2013

June 19

Our Heavenly Father, The One True God

We stand before You today at Your throne of grace, and bring ourselves as a living sacrifice before You. Father, we have been created in Your image. The very hands that hold the universe have given us life from clay, and You alone have formed us in an image pleasing to You. As our true creator, You have commanded us to have no other gods before you. No graven images before You, and no greater love above You. We stand collectively in Your holy presence today to acknowledge that we have all fallen short of Your greatest commandment. We have given ourselves to false idols, and loved things of this world at times more than You. Please forgive us the errors of our ways, and accept our true repentance for these great failings. Live in us, and through us not only today, but every day that we live on this earth. Help us to know You in a new and awesome way, that we might abide in Your commandment to hold You above all others. We love and adore You, and look forward to an ongoing relationship with You.

We ask these things in Jesus' mighty name. Amen!
