Pledge of Allegiance of the United States

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Section 4 of the Flag Code states:

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute."

HARRY S TRUMAN, APR. 6, 1946, 598TH NEWS
CONFERENCE, SPEAKING TO KEEN TEEN CLUB OF
CHICAGO, SPONSORED BY THE CHICAGO DAILY NEWS:

Q. “Mr. President, what part has religion played in your
advancement from local official to the highest office in tour land?”

THE PRESIDENT: “Well, a system of morals is necessary for the
welfare of any individual or any nation. The greatest system of morals
in the history of the world is that set out in the Sermon on the Mount,
which I would advise each of you to study with everything you have.”

O God of Mercy, we beg You now to protect in a special way those who are fighting for us and for the country we love. Bless them and take care of them. If they are tired, give them strength. If they are wounded and suffering, give them comfort. If they are lonely, touch them with Your gentle hand and let them know that You are near them. DAY 8 - DAILY HISTORY (MILITARY) - JUNE 1, 2010

JIMMY CARTER, KEEPING THE FAITH - MEMOIRS OF A
PRESIDENT, PUBLISHED 1982:

I was particularly impressed when the officers and enlisted
leaders of the armed forces visited...More than any other group, they
were likely to make some reference to their prayers for us or to say,
“God be with you.” Somehow, this emphasis on their religious faith
gave me a good feeling. I experienced a sense of brotherhood with
them, and remembered from my own eleven years in the Navy that it
was members of the military services who most wanted to maintain
peace based on a strong America.
