Pledge of Allegiance of the United States

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Section 4 of the Flag Code states:

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute."

DAY 19 - DAILY DEVOTION - JUNE 12, 2012

June 12

Sing A New Song

Psalm 96:1- (NASB) “Sing to the LORD a new song; Sing to the LORD, all the earth.”

When the girls were babies, I would sing to them while rocking them to sleep.  While rocking them, I would be singing songs that I knew to them, and then I would start singing a new song.   Sometimes, it would be a tune of one song and God would just give me new words.   Even though I was singing to the girls, I was really singing to My Lord.  What sweet memories I have of those special times.  Now that the girls are too old to rock, I just sing to Him all the time because I love Him.  I sing, Lord draw me away with you.  I just want to be with you in your secret place.  I just want to say your name, Jesus..

In Psalm 33:3 it says,  “Sing to Him a new song…”

You may be saying, I don’t know how or what singing a new song to the Lord means.. Let me try to explain:

Its singing from your in most being, singing a private song to God.. honoring him for what he’s done for you.. almost like writing a love note to him directly from your heart..  It’s singing a song of your own words describing & proclaiming your love & adoration to Him.    Proclaiming your freedom in Him, it’s showing those around you that You WILL praise Him no matter what happens or doesn’t happen..

When those around you see you singing a new song, they will see God’s goodness & mercy because of your new song.  Psalm 40:3 (NLT)“He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God.  Many will see what he has done and be amazed.  They will put their trust in the Lord.”

Why not start singing a new song unto the Lord?  Just start humming to Him and then slowly start opening your mouth to sing..  Don’t let the devil talk you out of it or tell you how stupid it sounds.   God knows your heart and will love to hear you sing to Him.   God loves songs of adoration to Him.  There will be so much wonderful worship in Heaven.  It says in Revelation 14:3, it says, “They sang as it were a new song before the throne…. ” and in Revelation 5:9, “And they sang a new song, saying: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals; For You were slain, and have redeemed us to God by Your blood.  Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation.”

God tells us repeatedly in His Word to sing a new song to the Lord.  Let His overwhelming peace, love and joy surround you as you begin right now singing to Him.

Psalm 98:1-2(AMP) “SING to the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things..”

DAY 18- DAILY BIBLE VERSE (LIKE CHILDREN) - JUNE 11, 2012

June 11

Luke: 18:16-17 (The Voice Bible)

Jesus: Let the little children come to Me. Never hinder them! Don’t you realize—the kingdom of God belongs to those who are like children? 17You can depend on this: if you don’t receive the Kingdom as a child would, you won’t enter it at all.

DAY 18 - DAILY DEVOTION - JUNE 11, 2012

June 11

Care Free

As I sat watching my youngest daughter, Alivia, swinging on her swing this morning, the Lord reminded me that I needed to be like a little child.  I said, “How Lord?”  He gently said, “See Alivia her hair blowing in the wind, and she doesn’t have a care in the world.  She is enjoying the warm weather, the sun shine & etc.. Why?  Because she knows you will take care of everything that concerns her.”

I was reminded every second of every day, to cast all my anxiety’s, cares, concerns, dreams, frustrations, hopes, let-downs, expectations, could have’s, should have’s and would have’s on Him..

1 Peter 5:7 (AMP) “Casting the whole of your care all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.”

He also said,  “Stop trying to carry the load, you are weighing yourself down!  You cause yourself un-needed headaches, neck aches, and back aches with all your un-necessary carrying of such heavy loads that only I (God) was meant to carry.”

Will you join me in being like a child now? Care Free!!

I am so glad that I don’t have to carry the load anymore.  The load was burdensome and heavy.  I can already feel the lifting of my neck and shoulders back to the place they should be without hurt or pain.

Thank you Lord for carrying our cares & worries on the cross for us.  We are free of the worries of this world because of the load you carried at Calvary.  Thank you Jesus for affectionately caring so much for us, that you carried it ALL!!!

Glory and Honor to His Holy Name!

1 Peter 5:7 (NLT) “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.”

DAY 18- DAILY PRAYER (VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL) - JUNE 11, 2012

June 11

Bright Morning Star (Revelation 22:16),

We seek Your blessing upon the vacation bible school programs that will be appearing across this nation, and offer these programs up in praise to Your Holy Name!  May the children that come together during this special occasion be touched in a Mighty way, being brought into the fold of Your sheep for eternity.  Send Your Holy Ghost to dwell amongst the counselors and children, bringing a fresh anointing of the truth of the Gospel to all ears.  Place each child under the feathers of Your wing to protect them from evil, and provide Your shield of Faithfulness to fight off the flaming arrows that might come against them.  Encamp Your warrior angels around each church property during these weeks of dedicated training of Your future disciples. May Satan be rebuked in each Vacation bible school program, and from each session and training.

Lord, we lift Your name on high during these events, as we proclaim Your Holy Name!  Let our special youth oriented worship be pleasing to You, and turn Your ears to the petitions of the children.  Soften the hardened hearts, and allow each child to see the Kingdom as only a child can view it...through Your most precious Son.  Please allow each adult that teaches Your word be made like a child in heart, that they might also see the Kingdom as only a child can view it. Plant the seeds during these events that will grow into wisdom and hope for this new generation, and continue to mature in the generations represented through each adult. And Father, let their ears hear the Gospel message in a way that it might permeate their hearts and minds for a lifetime.  Guide each counselor in the way that they present Your message, and let them give You all praise!

In the precious name of Your Son, Jesus Christ.  Amen!

DAY 18 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 11, 2012

June 11

He sent Paul Revere on his midnight ride to warn Lexington the British were coming.

A Harvard graduate, he was a successful doctor in Boston, but left his career when the British passed the hated Stamp Act.

With Samuel Adams, he organized the Provincial Congress to protest.

His name was Dr. Joseph Warren, born JUNE 11, 1741.

Following the Boston Tea Party, King George III enacted the Intolerable Acts of 1774:

blocking Boston harbor until citizens reimbursed the East India Tea Company;
quartering British soldiers in private homes;
allowing British officials to be unaccountable for their crimes; and
replacing Massachusetts' elected officials with royal appointees.

In response, Dr. Joseph Warren wrote the Suffolk Resolves, urging Massachusetts to establish a free state, boycott British goods, form militias and no longer be loyal to a king who violates their rights.

Fighting in the Battle of Bunker Hill, a monument marks where Warren died.

Three years earlier Dr. Joseph Warren stated on the anniversary of the Boston Massacre:

"If you perform your part, you must have the strongest confidence that the same Almighty Being who protected your pious and venerable forefathers...will still be mindful of you."

DAY 17- DAILY BIBLE VERSE (THOSE IN AUTHORITY) - JUNE 10, 2012

June 10

1 Timothy 2:1-4
New International Version (NIV)

2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

DAY 17 - DAILY DEVOTION - JUNE 10, 2012

June 10

Standing on the Promises

“…He who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23b)

Don’t you hate when people break their promises? I am so glad to know that God never breaks His promises.

Has God given you a specific promise that hasn’t come to pass yet?  Is someone or something trying to deter you from continuing to believe in the promise God gave you?  I want to encourage you to stand on His promise!  He will fulfill His Word. He is forever faithful!

As I was preparing for this devotion, I was reading about Russell Kelso Carter (1849-1928). Carter seemed to have a great life from being a great athlete, a successful teacher, and coach.  Then, he went on to become a Methodist preacher and a medical doctor.  Believe it or not, Carter was also a musician & songwriter. Around the age of 30, Carter began to have heart problems to where it was very serious, and the doctors did all they could to help him, to no avail. That is when he determined healing or no healing He took God at His Word.  Carter turned to God for his healing and began standing on His Promises for his healing.

Over the next months, Carter began to feel better and he was healed.  He lived another 49 years.  During the course of the months when he was still standing on the promises of God for his healing, he wrote the beautiful song, Standing on the Promises:

Standing on the promises of Christ my King, Through eternal ages let His praises ring, Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing, Standing on the promises of God.

Standing, standing, Standing on the promises of God my Savior; Standing, standing, Standing on the promises of God. Standing on the promises that cannot fail,

When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail, By the living Word of God I shall prevail, Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises, I now can see, Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me; Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free, Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord, Bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord, Overcoming daily with the Spirit sword, Standing on the promises of God. Standing on the promises I cannot fall, Listening every moment to the Spirit’s call Resting in my Savior as my all in all, Standing on the promises of God.

Carter stood strong on God’s Word & Promise.  Let’s stand strong on all of God’s promises! He is faithful.

I believe God is anxiously waiting to fulfill all of His promises in and through you? Don’t let anyone or anything cause doubt or fear.

Let’s believe God for what He’s promised, and believe Him for even greater things!

“…He who promised is faithful.” (Hebrews 10:23b)

DAY 17 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 10, 2012

June 10

The U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, graduated its first class on JUNE 10, 1854.

The Academy was established under George Bancroft, Secretary of Navy for President James Polk.

On June 16, 1845, Polk issued Order 27 to Secretary George Bancroft:

"The President...with heartfelt sorrow announces to the Army, the Navy, and the Marine Corps the death of Andrew Jackson...

The 8th day of June, about 6 o'clock, he resigned his spirit to his Heavenly Father...

He believed the liberties of his country imperishable...

He departed from this life in a full hope of a blessed immortality through the merits and atonement of the Redeemer."

George Bancroft, known as the "father of American history" for compiling the nation's first comprehensive record, wrote in Progress of Mankind:

"The Divine Being should...be known, not as a distant Providence...but as God present in the flesh...The consciousness of an incarnate God carried peace into the bosom of humanity."

George Bancroft continued:

"The idea of GOD WITH US dwelt and dwells in every system of thought that can pretend to vitality; in every oppressed people, whose struggles to be free have the promise of success; in every soul that sighs for redemption."

DAY 16 - SPECIAL ZIOLO FAMILY PRAYER REQUEST - JUNE 9, 2012

June 9

Dear prayer partners,

My family would like to ask you to specifically pray for us, as we are in the process of adopting a wonderful young boy from an orphanage in Uganda.  The Lord placed a desire in our hearts back in 2010, and the seed grew over the next few years.  It was this year (last month), that the Lord finally reveled 'the one' that He intended us to love for a lifetime.  The child's name is Akram, and He is the desire of our hearts.  Please pray that the Lord will provide all of the necessary finances, His favor in all proceedings, a swift process, an easy transition for all, and safe travels to and from Uganda, as well as in-country.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/akramziolo/

We acknowledge that there are over 2.7 million orphans in Uganda alone, and that the need is great for loving families to adopt those precious children.  The fingerprint of God is in each of them, and He has called us to love them as Christ loved the children.

Matthew 19:14

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

In Christ,

DAY 16 - DAILY DEVOTION - JUNE 9, 2012

June 9

Dying for Love

We say we love all sorts of things: cars, clothes, foods, movies, sports, & etc.…   Is that really Love?

I want to propose to you today that love is more than just saying I love you.   It is giving of YOU.   Love actually is dying to self.   Without death, love is selfish!

Look at John 3:16 (NLT) “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son..”  He gave His only son.  I have to ask you, will you give yourself away for love?  Will you die for love?

Yesterday, I was telling God how a friend had not treated me fairly.  You know what God told me?  He said, “Love them and show them the love of Christ even if they don’t deserve it.”  That is how you win people by loving and giving of yourself.  It’s DYING- Dying to self and anything else that hinders you from giving and showing un-conditional love.  Love truly is patient and kind.

It’s a daily dying to self and giving yourself to God to allow Him to use you for His Glory.   Can you picture with me now the cross of Jesus? He gave it all.  Will you give your all?  Call out to Him now and He will help you.  Just say here I am Lord, I give myself to you?  Help me to show love to a lost and dying world.

Jesus gave it all.  John 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.”

Maybe you’ve never had a good earthly example of love, then look at the best example known to man:  JESUS!   He laid down His life for you.  He gave it all for love!

Lord, we ask that you would exchange the old way of what we thought love was for this new love that You came to give.  What a beautiful exchange of love you gave us, O Lord!  You are so worthy of all our love and adoration.  Psalm 89:1 (NLT) “I will sing of the Lord’s unfailing love…”

We have a reason to sing today of His un-failing Love for us.   Will you join me in worshiping Him with a heart of gratitude?  Lord, we ask that you would help us to love like you.   And, help us to die to our flesh, inabilities, or anything else that would try to hinder our love for you and others.  Let our LOVE, draw others to a deeper relationship with You.

I like what Amy Carmichael, a Protestant Christian missionary in India once said,  “You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.”

DAY 16 - DAILY PRAYER (GENEROUS HEARTS) - JUNE 9, 2012

June 9

Most Loving Father,

We the people of the United States, and the world at large beseech You for our hearts to be softened for the great need in the world.  That You might loosen the hands that You have given each of us; to give freely to the poor, the hungry, those needing assistance, and those seeking a family to call their own.  That the Holy Spirit within each of us would be allowed to move without restraint and in obedience to comfort those around us.  That the purse strings that we clutch so tightly would be opened to bless others, especially those who live in third-world poverty, as it is nothing like we have in our own country.  Bless the children without parents who live as orphans, and give them a hope of being loved by a Foster or adoptive family.  Father, you knew the plans that You had for each life prior to conception, and You alone know what purpose each of us will fulfill for Your Kingdom.  Allow each life to flourish with good nutrition, clean water, love, and proper housing.  Protect the innocent from those who may wish to prey upon them, and strengthen the providers for those in orphanages, or other care communities. And Father, most of all, call those willing to serve in Your Earthly Kingdom to assist those who are without hope.

We ask this in Jesus' Mighty Name.  Amen!

DAY 16 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 9, 2012

June 9

Withholding taxes from people's paychecks began JUNE 9, 1943. Congress passed it as an emergency measure to get money to fight Hitler during World War II.

The idea came from Beardsley Ruml, treasurer of Macy's and chairman of New York's Federal Reserve Bank.

Called the "Pay-As-You-Go" tax, it was part of the patriotic war effort which included slogans: "Uncle Sam Needs You," "Buy War Bonds," and "Fight the Axis-Pay your Taxes." So much money came in with so few complaints that it continued even after the war ended.

John F. Kennedy told Congress, April 20, 1961:

"Introduced during the war when the income tax was extended to millions of new taxpayers, the wage-withholding system has been one of the most important and successful advances in our tax system in recent times.

Initial difficulties were quickly overcome, and the new system helped the taxpayer no less than the tax collector."

President John F. Kennedy explained in his Special Message on Taxation, April 20, 1961, how taxes expanded during World War II:

"In meeting the demands of war finance, the individual income tax moved from a selective tax imposed on the wealthy to the means by which the great majority of our citizens participate in paying for well over one-half of our total budget receipts."

But Americans were not always taxed. In his 2nd Annual Message, 1802, Thomas Jefferson wrote:

"We are able, without a direct tax, without internal taxes, and without borrowing, to make large and effectual payments toward the discharge of our public debt and the emancipation of our posterity from that mortal canker...

It is an encouragement, fellow-citizens, of the highest order to proceed as we have begun in substituting economy for taxation."

President Andrew Jackson stated in his 8th Annual Message, December 5, 1836:

"There is no such provision as would authorize Congress to collect together the property of the country, under the name of revenue, for the purpose of dividing it equally or unequally among the States or the people.

Indeed, it is not probable that such an idea ever occurred to the States when they adopted the Constitution."

In his Message to Congress, May 27, 1830, Andrew Jackson said:

"Through the favor of an overruling and indulgent Providence our country is blessed with general prosperity and our citizens exempted from the pressure of taxation, which other less favored portions of the human family are obliged to bear."

John F. Kennedy described his stimulus plan, November 20, 1962:

"It is a paradoxical truth that tax rates are too high and tax revenues are too low and the soundest way to raise the revenues in the long run is to cut the rates now...

Cutting taxes now is not to incur a budget deficit, but to achieve the more prosperous, expanding economy which can bring a budget surplus."

In 1988, President Ronald Reagan stated:

"I believe we really can, however, say that God did give mankind virtually unlimited gifts to invent, produce and create. And for that reason alone, it would be wrong for governments to devise a tax structure that suppresses and denies those gifts."

DAY 15- DAILY BIBLE VERSE (IMITATE GOD) - JUNE 8, 2012

DAY 15 - DAILY DEVOTION - JUNE 8, 2012

JUNE 8

Infusion not Confusion

Back several years ago, I went to a doctor who did vitamin infusions to build up my immune system. A vitamin infusion is an IV of vitamins that go directly into your blood stream versus having to swallow a vitamin.  It’s much faster and more effective for your body to absorb.

As I was preparing for this devotional, The Lord reminded me of those vitamin infusions.  He urged me to tell you about how much He wants you healthy and whole: Mind, Body, Soul and Spirit.  He said, “Tell my people, I love them and want only the best for them.  No more confusion-I will give them clear direction and wisdom.  And, when they hurt, I hurt.  We are in this world, but not of it.  Take joy in knowing that I have overcome the world and receive my Peace.  Peace that passes all understanding.”

Will you join me in letting go of anger, bad relationships, and un-forgiveness.  Allow the Holy Spirit to come in and take control.  Let the Holy Spirit do His job in filling you with Love, Joy, Peace, and a Sound mind.

I believe when we purpose in our hearts not to do anything else before getting our routine Holy Spirit infusion, then we are ready to do what He’s called us to do in our specific journeys in life.   And, because we’ve released all the things that tried to hinder or stop us, now, things you were going to have to go through, some how God turns it around or moves it away.   Psalm 37:23 “The steps of a righteous man are ordered of the Lord.”  He will take you places you never knew you could go because He has anointed you for such a time and journey as this!

I pray for a Fresh In-Filling and a New Anointing from the Holy Spirit!  Fill them up Lord, Fill them up to overflowing in Jesus Name!

Adonai,

Master of the universe, we seek your mighty power to banish slavery in this nation, and that, which stems from this nation.  To the ends of the Earth Father, we cry out to you to remove the strongholds of Satan from this fallen world.  We cry out against the modern day affliction of child slavery, commercial sexual exploitation of children, forced labor, human trafficking, prostitution, and a host of oppressions that subdue your children.  Rise up against such offenses, and rescue those who are held prisoner to this ungodly torture.  Rise up Mighty Father, and lose the chains of those who are bound and enslaved.  Send out a mighty legion of Angels to conquer the enemy, and to destroy the strongholds of slavery and perversion.  Allow the eyes of the oppressor who are blind through these sins to clearly see the salvation of Your Son, and come to know redemption though His blood.  Strengthen and protect those in this world that fight to end these modern day forms of slavery.  We humbly come to You on our knees for those that are in the darkness of oppression, for You Father will give them the light of hope, love, and protection.

We ask these things in Jesus' name.

Amen!

DAY 15 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 8, 2012

June 8

On JUNE 8, 1845, "Old Hickory" died. Wounded by a sword during the Revolutionary War, he later fought the Seminole Indians and, in the War of 1812, defeated the British in New Orleans.

He was governor of the Florida Territory, and is credited with proposing the name "Tennessee" at that State's first convention.

His name was Andrew Jackson.

His wife Rachel dying just three months before he took office as the 7th U.S. President, Andrew Jackson stated in his 2nd Inaugural:

"It is my fervent prayer to that Almighty Being before whom I now stand, and who has kept us in His hands from the infancy of our Republic to the present day...that He will...inspire the hearts of my fellow-citizens that we may be preserved from danger."

On December 30, 1836, Andrew Jackson wrote to A.J. Donelson, upon the death of his wife, Emily:

"We cannot recall her, we are commanded by our dear Saviour, not to mourn for the dead, but for the living...

She has changed a world of woe for a world of eternal happiness, and we ought to prepare as we too must follow...'The Lord's will be done on earth as it is in heaven.'"

Of the Bible, Andrew Jackson stated:

"That book, Sir, is the Rock upon which our republic rests."

DAY 14 - DAILY DEVOTION - JUNE 7, 2012

June 7

Let Go & Let God

Do you feel like you’ve been playing a game of tug & war with things that you know you should have released over to Him, but for some reason you are still holding onto them?

I am sure you have heard the saying, Let Go & Let God.  It’s really just that simple.  You have to come to a place where you are tired of struggling and are so desperate to give it all to Him, not holding back on anything.  All or none!  There is no in between.  You’ve held onto it long enough.  Now is the time to Let Go & Let God!

Let go of the pride, girlfriend, career, choices you’ve made, or climbing the corporate ladder.  Release it all to Him- He wants to take ahold of you & point you in the right direction.   Lay it down at His feet!   He is so ready to take the load from you.   Jesus is saying to you right now “Come to me, all who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 (GW)

When you Let Go & Let God that’s when we can finally  “..run straight toward the goal to win the prize that God’s heavenly call offers in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:14 (GW)

DAY 14 - DAILY PRAYER (GUIDEANCE) - JUNE 7, 2012

June 7

Father God, We are so grateful for the privilege to be able to go to you with anything. Our problems, questions, and our secret fear & doubts.

God give us a pure heart, single-minded in pursuit of you and presence. We pray that we won't miss the signs and callings of what you have for our lives. Show us insight so we can do your will, in obedience. God, divert our eyes from the worldly things, and desires, That we would live this life you gave us in completeness and abundance you intended. Teach us to rely on you more with the things we go through in life the good times and the hard. So that we can show ourselves approved of our tests and hardships and show complete trust in you.

In Jesus' Name, amen!

DAY 14 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 7, 2012

June 7

Spain laid claim to the Island of Jamaica since Columbus was shipwrecked there in 1503.

In 1655, Jamaica was captured by British Admiral William Penn, father of Pennsylvania's founder, but it was too far from England to defend, so the inhabitants turned to privateers, pirates and buccaneers for protection.

The likes of Blackbeard, Calico Jack and Captain Henry Morgan, namesake of the rum, attacked Spanish ships and returned to Jamaica with their booty.

On the island's sandy southeast coast, the city of Port Royal grew to surpass Boston as England's most prosperous New World settlement.

Many of the Caribbean's thousand pirates and smugglers operated from there, with half of the 200 ships a year passing through the harbor transporting slaves, liquor, and other contraband trade to Spanish America.

Because of the drinking, gaming houses, slave trading, brothels, taverns and grog shops, frequented by "pirates, cutthroats, whores and some of the vilest persons in the whole of the world," Port Royal was called "the richest and wickedest city in the world" or "the Sodom of the New World."

Suddenly, JUNE 7, 1692, an earthquake and tsunami sank it under the sea, followed by violent aftershocks.

Over 2,000 drowned. Graves were opened and bodies washed about.

It devoured the town's wharf, "with all those goodly brick houses upon it...and two entire streets beyond that," enormous waves tossed ships from the harbor into destroyed buildings, and in many places the ground opened up and "swallow'd up multitudes of people together."

Members of the Jamaica Council declared:

"We are become by this, an instance of God Almighty's severe judgment," and every future "seventh of June...be kept and observed by all the inhabitants of this Island, as an anniversary day of fasting and humiliation," in hopes that acknowledging "manifold sins and wickednesses committed against his Divine Majesty," may "appease God's imminent wrath and prevent heavier judgements."

A Quaker resident, John Pike, wrote June 19, 1691:

"Ah brother! If thou didst see those great persons that are now dead upon the water thou couldst never forget it. Great men who were so swallowed up with pride, that a man could not be admitted to speak with them, and women whose top-knots seemed to reach the clouds, now lie stinking upon the water, and are made meat for fish and fowls of the air."

Eye-witness Rev. Emmanuel Heath, the Anglican rector for Port Royal, had finished his morning prayer service at St Paul's Church and was meeting with John White, president of the island's council, when the floor began "rowling and moving" and they "heard the church and tower fall."

Rev. Heath wrote:

"Port Royal was terribly destroyed by an earthquake and breaking in of the sea upon it. The destruction was sudden...in four minutes multitudes were killed by the falling houses...

I believe God I never in my life saw such a terror...the earth opened and swallowed up people before my face...

The sea swallowed up the greatest part of that wretched sinful place...They are so wicked, I fear God...will utterly destroy all by this dreadful Judgment...

By this terrible judgment, God will make them reform their lives, for there was not a more ungodly people on the face of the earth."

A resident, Samuel Bernard, wrote:

"We shall be unworthy of God's mercies if we be not by His judgments taught to learn righteousness."

In September of 1860, Jamaica was visited with a tremendous revival, as documented in Dr. J. Edwin Orr's book, "The Event of the Century: The 1857-1858 Awakening."

Beginning in St. Elizabeth Parish, as recorded by Moravian missionary Rev. Theodor Sonderman, it spread to Montego Bay, Bethel Town, Spanish Town and Kingston. Thousands were baptized and churches of every denomination were crowded to overflowing.
