Pledge of Allegiance of the United States

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Section 4 of the Flag Code states:

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute."

DAY 28 - DAILY HISTORY (FIRES) - JUNE 21, 2010

WOODROW WILSON, MAR. 5, 1917, 2ND INAUGURAL:

We are being forged into a new unity amidst the fires that now
blaze throughout the world. In their ardent heat we shall, in God’s
Providence, let us hope, be purged of faction and division, purified of
the errant humors of party and of private interest, and shall stand
forth in the days to come with a new dignity of national pride and
spirit...I know now what the task means. I realize to the full the
responsibility which it involves. I pray God I may be given the wisdom
and the prudence to do my duty in the true spirit of this great people.
