Pledge of Allegiance of the United States

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Section 4 of the Flag Code states:

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute."

DAY 19 - DAILY HISTORY - JUNE 12, 2010

THOMAS JEFFERSON, MAR. 4, 1805, SECOND INAUGURAL:

I shall need, too, the favor of that Being in whose hands we
are, who led our forefathers, as Israel of old, from their native land and
planted them in a country flowing with all the necessities and comforts
of life, who has covered our infancy with His Providence and our riper
years with His wisdom and power, and to whose goodness I ask you to
join with me in supplications that He will so enlighten the minds of
your servants, guide their councils and prosper their measures, that
whatever they do shall result in your good, and shall secure to you the
peace, friendship and approbation of all nations.
