Pledge of Allegiance of the United States

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Section 4 of the Flag Code states:

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute."

DAY 18 - DAILY HISTORY (BLESSED) - JUNE 11, 2010

FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT, JAN. 20, 1945, 4TH INAUGURAL:

As I stand here today, having taken the solemn oath of office
in the presence of my fellow countrymen - in the presence of God - I
know that it is America’s purpose that we shall not fail...The Almighty
God has blessed our land in many ways. He has given our people stout
hearts and strong arms with which to strike mighty blows for freedom
and truth. He has given to our country a faith which has become the
hope of all peoples in an anguished world.

So we pray to Him now for the vision to see our way clearly -
to see the way that leads to a better life for ourselves and for all our
fellow men - to the achievement of His will, to peace on earth. In the
presence of God - I know that it is America’s purpose that we shall not
fail.
