Pledge of Allegiance of the United States

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Section 4 of the Flag Code states:

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute."

DAY 6 - DAILY HISTORY (MOURNING) - MAY 30, 2010

GEORGE W. BUSH, SEP. 14, 2001, NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER
& REMEMBRANCE, NATIONAL CATHEDRAL:

This world He created is of moral design. On this national day
of prayer and remembrance, we ask almighty God to watch over our
nation, and grant us patience and resolve in all that is to come. We
pray that He will comfort and console those who now walk in sorrow.
We thank Him for each life we now must mourn, and the promise of a
life to come. As we have been assured, neither death nor life, nor
angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to
come, nor height nor depth, can separate us from God’s love.
May He bless the souls of the departed. May He comfort our own.
And may He always guide our country. God bless America.
