Pledge of Allegiance of the United States

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Section 4 of the Flag Code states:

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute."

Let Go & Let God

Do you feel like you’ve been playing a game of tug & war with things that you know you should have released over to Him, but for some reason you are still holding onto them?

I am sure you have heard the saying, Let Go & Let God.  It’s really just that simple.  You have to come to a place where you are tired of struggling and are so desperate to give it all to Him, not holding back on anything.  All or none!  There is no in between.  You’ve held onto it long enough.  Now is the time to Let Go & Let God!

Let go of the pride, girlfriend, career, choices you’ve made, or climbing the corporate ladder.  Release it all to Him- He wants to take ahold of you & point you in the right direction.   Lay it down at His feet!   He is so ready to take the load from you.   Jesus is saying to you right now “Come to me, all who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 (GW)

When you Let Go & Let God that’s when we can finally  “..run straight toward the goal to win the prize that God’s heavenly call offers in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:14 (GW)

DAY 14 - DAILY PRAYER (GUIDEANCE) - JUNE 7, 2012

June 7

Father God, We are so grateful for the privilege to be able to go to you with anything. Our problems, questions, and our secret fear & doubts.

God give us a pure heart, single-minded in pursuit of you and presence. We pray that we won't miss the signs and callings of what you have for our lives. Show us insight so we can do your will, in obedience. God, divert our eyes from the worldly things, and desires, That we would live this life you gave us in completeness and abundance you intended. Teach us to rely on you more with the things we go through in life the good times and the hard. So that we can show ourselves approved of our tests and hardships and show complete trust in you.

In Jesus' Name, amen!

DAY 14 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 7, 2012

June 7

Spain laid claim to the Island of Jamaica since Columbus was shipwrecked there in 1503.

In 1655, Jamaica was captured by British Admiral William Penn, father of Pennsylvania's founder, but it was too far from England to defend, so the inhabitants turned to privateers, pirates and buccaneers for protection.

The likes of Blackbeard, Calico Jack and Captain Henry Morgan, namesake of the rum, attacked Spanish ships and returned to Jamaica with their booty.

On the island's sandy southeast coast, the city of Port Royal grew to surpass Boston as England's most prosperous New World settlement.

Many of the Caribbean's thousand pirates and smugglers operated from there, with half of the 200 ships a year passing through the harbor transporting slaves, liquor, and other contraband trade to Spanish America.

Because of the drinking, gaming houses, slave trading, brothels, taverns and grog shops, frequented by "pirates, cutthroats, whores and some of the vilest persons in the whole of the world," Port Royal was called "the richest and wickedest city in the world" or "the Sodom of the New World."

Suddenly, JUNE 7, 1692, an earthquake and tsunami sank it under the sea, followed by violent aftershocks.

Over 2,000 drowned. Graves were opened and bodies washed about.

It devoured the town's wharf, "with all those goodly brick houses upon it...and two entire streets beyond that," enormous waves tossed ships from the harbor into destroyed buildings, and in many places the ground opened up and "swallow'd up multitudes of people together."

Members of the Jamaica Council declared:

"We are become by this, an instance of God Almighty's severe judgment," and every future "seventh of June...be kept and observed by all the inhabitants of this Island, as an anniversary day of fasting and humiliation," in hopes that acknowledging "manifold sins and wickednesses committed against his Divine Majesty," may "appease God's imminent wrath and prevent heavier judgements."

A Quaker resident, John Pike, wrote June 19, 1691:

"Ah brother! If thou didst see those great persons that are now dead upon the water thou couldst never forget it. Great men who were so swallowed up with pride, that a man could not be admitted to speak with them, and women whose top-knots seemed to reach the clouds, now lie stinking upon the water, and are made meat for fish and fowls of the air."

Eye-witness Rev. Emmanuel Heath, the Anglican rector for Port Royal, had finished his morning prayer service at St Paul's Church and was meeting with John White, president of the island's council, when the floor began "rowling and moving" and they "heard the church and tower fall."

Rev. Heath wrote:

"Port Royal was terribly destroyed by an earthquake and breaking in of the sea upon it. The destruction was sudden...in four minutes multitudes were killed by the falling houses...

I believe God I never in my life saw such a terror...the earth opened and swallowed up people before my face...

The sea swallowed up the greatest part of that wretched sinful place...They are so wicked, I fear God...will utterly destroy all by this dreadful Judgment...

By this terrible judgment, God will make them reform their lives, for there was not a more ungodly people on the face of the earth."

A resident, Samuel Bernard, wrote:

"We shall be unworthy of God's mercies if we be not by His judgments taught to learn righteousness."

In September of 1860, Jamaica was visited with a tremendous revival, as documented in Dr. J. Edwin Orr's book, "The Event of the Century: The 1857-1858 Awakening."

Beginning in St. Elizabeth Parish, as recorded by Moravian missionary Rev. Theodor Sonderman, it spread to Montego Bay, Bethel Town, Spanish Town and Kingston. Thousands were baptized and churches of every denomination were crowded to overflowing.

DAY 13- DAILY BIBLE VERSE (SUFFERINGS) - JUNE 6, 2012

June 6

Romans 8:18 (The Voice Bible)

18Now I’m sure of this: the sufferings we endure now are not even worth comparing to the glory that is coming and will be revealed in us.

DAY 13 - DAILY DEVOTION - JUNE 6, 2012

June 6

The Gift of the Wheel Chair

James 1:2-4 (MSG) “Consider it a sheer Gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work, so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.”

Joni Eareckson Tada said, “Even though I have rough moments in my wheelchair, for the most part, I consider my paralysis a gift. Just as Jesus exchanged the meaning of the Cross, from a symbol of torture to one of hope and salvation. He gives me the grace to do the same with my chair. If a cross can become a blessing, so can a wheelchair. The wheelchair, in a sense, is behind me now. The despair is over. There are now other crosses to bear, other “wheelchairs” in my life to be exchanged into gifts.”

Maybe you aren’t in a physical wheel chair, but you’ve had adversities in life that you can call your wheelchair- intense pain and sorrow, financial failures, or loosing your marriage.   I am sure at times it was torture, or maybe it still is torture.  Will you praise Him in the pain, sorrow, and torture?

You may be asking how can a wheel chair be a gift?  Look at Romans 8:18  “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”  And, Galatians 6:9 “in just a short time, we will reap a harvest, if we faint not”

I have decided to Praise Him with the wheelchair or without the wheelchair.  I Praise Him for the gift of the wheelchair knowing that it’s working good for me. He has placed so much inside of me, and He is bringing so much out of me- He’s birthing something awesome in you and me.   For we shall be like Him as we Praise Him in our adversities.  Let His Glory and Grace cover you in your wheelchair.  You are being made strong in Him as you praise Him for the gift of the wheelchair.   God trusts you enough to have the wheelchair.  God looks at you & says there is my son or daughter in whom I am well pleased.  I find great delight in you.  And, I am pouring out my grace to cover and carry you.

Don’t look at the wheelchair as a curse or a trouble.  Let it strengthen you for an even greater work for Christ.  And, NEVER give up!  2 Corinthians 4:8 (GW) says, “In every way we’re troubled, but we aren’t crushed by our troubles. We’re frustrated, but we don’t give up.”

I could have allowed my intense pain & sorrow of loosing my best friend and husband of almost 16 years, hinder what God was wanting to birth inside of me that was placed there long ago.  We are getting stronger and more valuable through the fire and through our wheelchairs.  I love what 1 Peter 1:6-9 (NLT) says, “So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while.  These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So, when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world. The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls.”

Your test will be a testimony for others.  What great reward awaits for those who consider their wheelchair- a gift!

“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.  1 Thessalonians 5:18

DAY 13 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 6, 2012

June 6

D-Day was JUNE 6, 1944.

160,000 troops landed on the Normandy coast of France in the largest invasion force in history, involving 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft along a 50-mile heavily fortified stretch of beach.

It was a major turning point in World War II.

Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight Eisenhower issued the order which began the march of nearly 100,000 Allied troops across Europe to defeat Hitler's National Socialist Workers Party:

"You are about to embark upon a great crusade...

The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you...

You will bring about...the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe...

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened, he will fight savagely...

And let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking."

President Franklin Roosevelt stated JUNE 6, 1944:

"My fellow Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation...

I ask you to join with me in prayer:

Almighty God, Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our republic, our religion, and our civilization...

Give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith. They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard.

For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces...

We know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph...

Some will never return. Embrace these, Father, and receive them, Thy heroic servants, into Thy kingdom."

Over 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded in the Normandy invasion.

FDR concluded:

"Help us, Almighty God, to rededicate ourselves in renewed faith in Thee in this hour of great sacrifice...

I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer. As we rise to each new day, and again when each day is spent, let words of prayer be on our lips, invoking Thy help to our efforts.

Give us strength...and, O Lord, give us Faith. Give us Faith in Thee...With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy...

And a peace that will let all of men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil. Thy will be done, Almighty God. Amen."

God is Able

Ephesians 3:20 (AMP)  “Now to Him Who, who is able to carry out His purpose and do superabundantly, far over and above all that we dare ask or think infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams”

Don’t you get frustrated when someone comes to you saying they need something, but they really don’t tell you what they need?  They just keep talking maybe even rambling on and on almost like a child.   So after a little while, you say it again, “what do you need”?  They continue talking in circles and finally you have to interrupt them.   Your voice gets stronger this time as you ask them again, what do you need?

I want to ask you today, what do you need?  We have a very Able God to do what you need?  You can overcome any situation today because He defeated death, hell and the grave!

2 Corinthians 9:8 (AMP) “God is able to make all grace every favor and earthly blessing come to you in abundance, so that you may always and under all circumstances, and whatever the need be self-sufficient possessing enough to require no aid or support and furnished in abundance for every good work and charitable donation”

Let me ask you again? What do you need? God is Able to do whatever you may need today: He can help you overcome addictions, frustrations & dis-appointments in life, and not having enough.  He can help you stand strong in the midst of adverse situations that may arise.

God can take your filth and shame and make something new out of it!  He can turn that hopeless situation, and make it work out for your good.   Know, Trust and See that He is Able!

Don’t settle for normal; see the impossible situation as being possible!   God is calling you higher- calling you to do the un-common thing, to stop doubting and start believing!   He wants you to soar like an eagle and to really know that He is Able!  Hold on with bulldog faith with the tenacity that nothing will move your faith and trust, knowing that He is Able to do exceedingly abundantly above what you can ask or think.

DAY 12 - DAILY PRAYER (ONE TRUE GOD) - JUNE 5, 2012

June 5

Father in heaven we pray that you would reign as the one true living God of this land we call America. We pray that the nations love of idolatry , power, and money would come to an end. We pray that people would come back to more of a fear of you, than pleasing the god of this world. We pray that the true manifest power of Jesus would come back to our churches, making the world jealous of your presence and favour on our lives. We pray that you would make our enemies our footstool, and that Jesus Christ would be supreme once again in this great nation.

We ask for your forgiveness and lack of passion the church has had in the past. We know that religion can not save us, church can not save us, only your blood and the cross give us true power. So know Lord we turn our backs on the world’s system, as the love of many is waxing cold, our love for you if ever growing. We the bride of Christ are preparing for your soon return getting our eyes and attentions off the temporal things to things of the eternal. Save us by your mercy and grace Father , revive the hearts of your children once again we pray in Jesus name amen.

DAY 12 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 5, 2012

June 5

JUNE 5, 1967, the Six-Day War began.

Egypt sent 80,000 troops and 900 tanks to attack Israel.

Jordan and Syria, with Soviet weapons, violently shelled Jerusalem and Israeli villages. Cairo radio announced:

"The hour has come in which we shall destroy Israel."

The hot line between Washington and Moscow was used for the first time.

In a surprise move, Israeli Air Force destroyed 400 Egyptian planes, courageously drove Syria from the Golan Heights and captured all of Jerusalem.

In a CBS-TV interview, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion stated:

"In Israel, in order to be a realist you must believe in miracles."

Seven months after the War, on Jan. 7, 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson toasted Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, saying:

"Welcome to our family table...All Americans-and all Israelis-know...that none...can ever live by bread alone...

One of your ancestors said it for all men almost 2,000 years ago...for peace it is written, 'pursue it.'

That is our intention in the Middle East...To pursue peace...

If we are wise, if we are fortunate, if we work together - perhaps our Nation and all nations may know the joys of that promise God once made about the children of Israel:

'I will make a covenant of peace with them...it shall be an everlasting covenant.'"

Ben-Gurion, David. Oct. 5, 1956, comment in an interview with Edward R. Murrow, "Person to Person," CBS-TV. James Beasely Simpson, Best Quotes of '54, '55, '56 (NY: Thomas Y. Crowell Co., 1957), p. 302. Public Papers of the Presidents: Toasts of the President & Prime Minister Eshkol at a Dinner at the LBJ Ranch. Jan. 7, 1968, "Mr. Prime Minister, Mrs. Eshkol: Welcome to our family table. We are honored and happy to have you here in our home. Here, we ask only that you enjoy the warm ties of friendship and partnership that mean so much to each of us, and both our peoples. Our peoples, Mr. Prime Minister, share many qualities of mind and heart. We both rise to challenge. We both admire the courage and the resourcefulness of the citizen-soldier. We each draw strength and purpose for today from our heroes of yesterday. We both know the thrill of bringing life from a hard but a rewarding land. But all Americans-and all Israelis-also know that prosperity is not enough-that none of our restless generation can ever live by bread alone. For we are equally nations in search of a dream. We share a vision and purpose far brighter than our abilities to make deserts bloom. We have been born and raised to seek and find peace. In that common spirit of our hopes, I respect our hope that a just and lasting peace will prevail between Israel and her neighbors. This past year has been a busy one for America's peacemakers-in the Middle East, in Cyprus, in Vietnam. Wherever conscience and faith have carried them, they have found a stubborn truth confirmed. Making peace is punishing work. It demands enormous courage, flexibility, and imagination. It is ill served by hasty slogans or half-solutions. I know you understand this, sir, better than most men. One of your ancestors said it for all men almost 2,000 years ago: 'Other precepts are performed when the occasion arises . . . but for peace it is written, '"pursue it."' That is our intention in the Middle East and throughout our world. To pursue peace. To find peace. To keep peace forever among men. If we are wise, if we are fortunate, if we work together-perhaps our Nation and all nations may know the joys of that promise God once made about the children of Israel: 'I will make a covenant of peace with them . . . it shall be an everlasting covenant.' Let that be our toast to each other-our Governments and our peoples-as this new year begins. Its days are brighter, Mr. Prime Minister, because you lighten them with your presence here and the spirit you will leave behind."

DAY 11 - DAILY DEVOTION - JUNE 4, 2012

June 4

Worship Is Your Weapon

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (NLT) “We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.  We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.”

I remember getting back from the oncologists office that Thursday back in August 2010 after just being told Bryan had the worst kind of stomach cancer.   As soon as we opened the front door of our home, we called for the girls and worshiped by dancing, singing, reading the Word, and praying.   We clapped aloud with our victory song.  The Bible tells us so many times that we have overcome and that we win.  So in our minds, why not worship because we have the victory.

You may be saying, Katherine, the devil won because Bryan died.  No!  Let me explain, the devil doesn’t have authority over life and death, God does.  Look at Deuteronomy 32:39 “See now that I myself am He! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand.”

The devil thought if he could just get Bryan to die then maybe we all would shut up & shut down, but what the devil didn’t know was that this huge mandate had already been placed on me and the girls long ago.   And, that mandate, got stirred up even more so after Bryan’s diagnosis & eventually death.  Now, there is no stopping us now!   We want to shake the foundations of the earth with worship.

All throughout the Bible there are so many examples about worship, to name a few look at:

Shad rack, Me shack & Abednego- wouldn’t bow down to worship anything other than Jesus.

Wasn’t it the Israelites who built golden images to worship while Moses was on the mountain?

And in Matthew 4, the devil tried to get Jesus to bow down & worship him.

What will you worship today? Why not worship the one true God and use your worship to defeat the devil.  God inhabits the praises of His people.  I encourage you to give Him all your praise & worship.  Don’t let anything get in your way of worshiping Him.

We are still worshiping even after all these months that have gone by since the death of Bryan.  Infact, what the enemy tried to annihilate us with has become our stepping stones.  I am more determined now to continue raising up a mighty remnant of worshipers around the world who will worship The Lord, and who will worship their way through whatever battle they are facing.

Will you be that worshiper? I live to worship Him.   Are you living to worship Him?  If you will, I can’t even begin to describe the freedom you will have when you use your worship as your weapon, and start shouting to God with praises in the midst of whatever you are going through.  I love what the Message Bible says in Galatians 5:1, “Christ has set us free to live a free life. So take your stand! Never again let anyone put a harness of slavery on you.”

We are free to Worship Him because Christ has set us free from everything that would hinder us, or try to exalt itself above the one who is to be worshiped!  With that being said, I think its so fitting to do what Psalm 47:1 says,  “O clap your hands, all you people; shout to God with the voice of triumph.”

DAY 11 - DAILY PRAYER (PRAYER) - JUNE 4, 2012

June 4

"AMERICA ON ALTAR CALL"

Join me in prayer and please follow me every where
Join me and soon we'll be one on one in joyful prayer
Soon the two of us will have a prayer line no longer small
For forty days; we'll have America on altar call.

Hand in hand in back yards, town to town, and highways
Churches of all faiths and rich or poor will begin to pray
Children, mamas and daddies, and folks we don't know at all
For forty days; we'll have America on altar call.

For forty days; we'll have America on altar call
For forty days; throughout court houses and malls
Message in our prayers will say it was worth all the time
We pray no more hunger, wars, hate, or never-ending crime.

Angels in Heaven will see America has returned like it use to be
Angels in Heaven will see that our flag is still waving free
Started with two and now there's a million big and small
For forty days; we'll have America on altar call.

DAY 11 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 4, 2012

June 4

The turning point in the Pacific War began JUNE 4, 1942.

American intelligence intercepted Japan's plans to capture Midway Island and from there, Hawaii.

The outnumbered U.S. Pacific Fleet ambushed the Japanese armada, but was losing badly.

It was not until American dive bombers, navigating by guess and by God, sighted the Japanese aircraft carriers far below through a break in the clouds at the precise moment the Japanese planes had left to attack the U.S.S. Yorktown.

In just five minutes, the screeching American dive bombers sank three Japanese carriers, and a fourth shortly after.

After this providential event, Japan was forced to go on the defensive.

After the Battle of Midway, plans were begun to free the Philippines. President Roosevelt said, August 12, 1943:

"Three weeks after the armies of the Japanese launched their attack on Philippine soil, I sent a proclamation...to the people of the Philippines...that their freedom will be redeemed...The great day of your liberation will come, as surely as there is a God in Heaven."

Roosevelt stated October 20, 1944:

"On this occasion of the return of General MacArthur to Philippine soil...we renew our pledge. We and our Philippine brothers in arms - with the help of Almighty God - will drive out the invader."

June 3

To Judge or Not

James 4:11-12(NLT) says, “Don’t speak evil of each other… So what right do you have to judge your neighbor”?

Don’t you just love when people judge you?  No!  No one likes to be judged.  We judge in so many different ways: not knowing the whole story, the way a situation was handled or not handled correctly or past lifestyle choices.   Or, have you been guilty of judging someone because they didn’t meet up to your expectations?  The Bible says, “Judge not, lest you be judged.”  Those are harsh but necessary words.

Ephesians 4:29 (NKJV) “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”

God we ask that you help us to be more compassionate, forgiving, gentle, kind, loving, and patient.  Let us speak words of life instead of words of judgement.   We lift up our eyes to you Lord, not to concentrate on judging others but to let you be the judge.  We want hearts that are forgiving without finding fault, not looking for the speck in others.  Help us to find good in those whom others have written off.

Lord, I pray that you would bring healing to those who have been judged.  Let them sense your sweet presence of love towards them now, no matter what they have done.   Thank you Lord for your love and forgiveness.  And, thank you for not judging us when we should have been judged.  Your mercy, O God, endures forever!

Let this verse be your life mission statement, Colossians 4:6 MSG “..Make the most of every opportunity. Be gracious in your speech. The goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation, not put them down, not cut them out.”

DAY 10 - DAILY PRAYER (MEDIA) - JUNE 3, 2012

June 3

Father, once again, I come before your throne - first to give honor and praise and thanksgiving. What a marvelous God you are!! Thank you for your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank you for your holy Word, the Bible. Thank you for the freedoms afforded us as citizens of America. Thank you  that you are unchanging - who you were yesterday and who you will be tomorrow is exactly who you are today! In this world of constant change, how wonderful that we have a God who does not change. A God whose Word does not change - what You spoke in the beginning, still holds for today. What you desired for your people of yesteryear, is still the desire of your heart today and will be tomorrow.

Father, I especially want to pray for all those associated with the media - producers, directors, publishers, actors, songwriters, artists - anyone and everyone who works in the field or has influence in the field of media. Father, give them a life-changing encounter with you - one that will bring peace into their lives. I come against selfish ambition and egotistic tendencies.

I ask, Father, that You grant wisdom and understanding to media leaders as they make decisions that will impact our world and especially the minds of our youth and children. I come against the violence and lewdness in the media. I ask for a return of sanctity of marriage and the family being portrayed in the lives and productions of the media. I pray for believers who work in media - give them courage and boldness as they hold fast to their beliefs and become true witnesses of your goodness and mercy.

Father, use the world of media to your advantage. Let your love and power flow throughout our nation and even our world. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

DAY 10 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 3, 2012

June 3

During its Golden Age, the Dutch Republic of the Seven United Netherlands had settlements around the world, including a monopoly on trade with Asia, financed by the first modern stock market.

The Dutch sent Henry Hudson to find a water route across America to the Pacific.

Though unsuccessful, Hudson claimed the land along the "Hudson" River, and there the Dutch West India Company founded the New Netherlands Colony, receiving its charter JUNE 3, 1621.

Franklin Roosevelt told the Detroit Jewish Chronicle, March 7, 1935:

"All I know about the origin of the Roosevelt family in this country is that all branches bearing the name are apparently descended from Claes Martenssen Van Roosevelt, who came from Holland sometime before 1648."

The Chamber of Amsterdam wrote in articles for the Dutch Colony, 1624:

"They shall within their territory practice no other form of divine worship than that of the Reformed religion...and thus by their Christian life and conduct seek to draw the Indians and other blind people to the knowledge of God and His word, without, however, persecuting any on account of his faith, but leaving each one the use of his conscience."

The Charter of Freedoms, June 7, 1629, gave land to wealthy "Patroons" who helped 50 families emigrate, stating:

"Colonists shall...in the speediest manner...find out ways and means whereby they may support a Minister and Schoolmaster, that thus the service of God and zeal for religion may not grow cool."

In 1664, the Dutch Colony of New Netherlands was taken over by the English and renamed New York.

Welling: In the early sixties of the seventeenth century, Pieter Plockhoy of Zeeland province, The Netherlands, started the first of the many Utopias which shine in the pages of American history. In 1662 he sailed from Holland with twenty-four families, to establish his colony of 'universal Christian brotherhood,' ... to raise up an universal magistrate in Christendom, that can suffer all sorts of people (of what religion soever they are) in any one country, as God suffers the same in all the countries of the world.' The city of Amsterdam met the expenses of the expedition. The place chosen was on the Delaware River, & the following year forty more immigrants joined those already there. Plockhoy's Utopia was soon to come to a terrible end. It resisted the British troops of Sir Robert Carr which landed in New Netherland in 1664, & was destroyed 'to a very naile.'
