Pledge of Allegiance of the United States

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Section 4 of the Flag Code states:

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute."

DAY 26 - DAILY PRAYER (FATHER'S) - JUNE 19, 2011

June 19

God our Father,

In your wisdom and love you made all things.
Bless those fathers who have taken upon themselves, the responsibility of parenting.

Bless those who have lost a spouse to death ... or divorce
who are parenting their children alone.

Strengthen them by your love that they may be and become
the loving, caring persons they are meant to be.

Grant this through Christ our Lord.  Amen

DAY 26 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 19, 2011

American Minute for June 19th:

The first formal "Father's Day" was celebrated JUNE 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. Sonora Louise Smart Dodd heard a church sermon on the newly established Mother's Day and wanted to honor her father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, who had raised six children by himself after his wife died in childbirth. Sonora drew up a petition supported by the Young Men's Christian Association and the ministers of Spokane. In 1916, Woodrow Wilson spoke at a Spokane Fathers' Day service. President Nixon, in 1972, established Father's Day as a permanent national observance. On Father's Day, 1988, Ronald Reagan said: "Children, vulnerable and dependent, desperately need security, and it has ever been a duty and a joy of fatherhood to offer it. Being a father requires strength...and more than a little courage...to persevere, to fight discouragement, and to keep working for the family." Reagan continued: "With God's grace, fathers find the patience to teach, the fortitude to provide, the compassion to comfort, and the mercy to forgive. All of this is to say that they find the strength to love their wives and children selflessly." President Reagan ended: "Let us...express our thanks and affection to our fathers, whether we can do so in person or in prayer."

DAY 25 - DAILY PRAYER (FOREIGN RELATIONS) - JUNE 18, 2011

June 18

For Good Foreign Relations

O my Jesus, I pray for the international relations of my nation, because our global influence has allowed us into other countries to spread Your Holy Word in the past. I pray that those You raise up would give favor and offer safety to the missionaries in their respective nations.

Raise up wise men and women to fill our diplomatic corps, persons of skill, morals, and understanding in foreign affairs and in the affairs of state. Grant safety to our embassy personnel in every foreign land so they will be able to maintain good relations in their posts, and so that even our enemies will be at peace with them. I ask that Your Hand would be with our diplomats to such a degree that even the most fanatical of our enemies would fear attacking our embassies and their personnel. Rather, Lord, let our enemies begin to see the United States as an ensign of peace to the world and realize that living in peace is preferable to living in fear and bondage.

Send Your Holy Spirit to alert our personnel of any potential attacks, and give them the power to quell them before they happen. Keep them always in the safety of Your Arms. Amen.

DAY 25 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 18, 2011

American Minute for June 18th:

The War of 1812 began on JUNE 18, 1812. The British captured American ships and enslaved sailors. They incited Indians to capture Fort Mims, massacring 500 men, women and children. They captured the Capitol, burnt the White House, bombarded Fort McHenry and attacked New Orleans. Outraged, many volunteered for the Army, including Davy Crockett. In his Proclamation of War, President James Madison stated: "I do moreover exhort all the good people of the United States...as they feel the wrongs which have forced on them the last resort of injured nations...to consult the best means under the blessing of Divine Providence of abridging its calamities." In the three years of the War, President Madison, who had introduced the First Amendment in the First Session of Congress, issued Proclamations of Public Humiliation and Prayer in 1812 and 1813, followed by a Proclamation of Public Fasting in 1814, in which he stated: "in the present time of public calamity and war a day may be...observed by the people of the United States as a day of public humiliation and fasting and of prayer to Almighty God." After the War, in 1815, James Madison proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving to the "Divine Author of Every Good and Perfect Gift."

DAY 24 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 17, 2011

American Minute for June 17th:

"Don't Shoot Until You See the Whites of Their Eyes!" was the order given JUNE 17, 1775, by Colonel William Prescott to troops on Breed's Hill, adjacent Bunker Hill, guarding the north entrance to Boston Harbor. They were aiming at 2,300 British soldiers, under General Howe, marching at them with bayonets fixed. Twice the Americans repelled them until they ran out of gunpowder. The British then burned the nearby town of Charlestown. This first action of the Continental Army saw over 1,000 British killed, and nearly 500 Americans. This same day, 300 miles away in Philadelphia, the Continental Congress drafted George Washington's commission as commander-in-chief, for which he refused a salary. Washington wrote to his wife, Martha: "Dearest...It has been determined in Congress, that the whole army raised for the defense of the American Cause shall be put under my care, and that it is necessary for me to proceed immediately to Boston to take...command...I shall rely therefore, confidently, on that Providence which has heretofore preserved, and been bountiful to me." Washington ended: "I...got Colonel Pendleton to Draft a Will...the Provision made for you, in case of my death, will, I hope, be agreeable."

DAY 23 - DAILY PRAYER (MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH) - JUNE 16, 2011

June 16

RICHARD NIXON, JAN. 20, 1969, FIRST INAUGURAL:

Only a few short weeks ago we shared the glory of man’s first
sight of the world as God sees it, as a single sphere reflecting light in
the darkness.  As the Apollo astronauts flew over the moon’s gray surface on Christmas Eve, they spoke to us of the beauty of earth - and in that voice so clear across the lunar distance, we heard them invoke God’s blessing on its goodness... Let us go forward, firm in our faith, steadfast in our purpose, cautious of the dangers, but sustained by our confidence in the will of God.

The Prayer For Protection

The Light of God surrounds me.
The Love of God enfolds me.
The Power of God protects me.
The Presence of God watches over me.
The Mind of God guides me.
The Life of God flows through me.
The Laws of God direct me.
The Power of God abides within me.
The Joy of God uplifts me.
The Strength of God renews me.
The Beauty of God inspires me.
Wherever I am, God is!

“Prayer for Protection” is one of two Freeman compositions carried to the moon by Apollo astronauts. In 1969, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin took the “Prayer for Protection” along on the first manned moon landing. A microfilm copy of Freeman's poem “I Am There” was left on the moon in 1971 by Apollo XV astronaut James B. Irwin.
This prayer was written by James Dillet Freeman for all soldiers during World War II. It is as powerful today as it was then.

DAY 23 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 16, 2011

American Minute for June 16th:

The father of the American space program died JUNE 16, 1977. He developed the V-2 rocket for Germany before emigrating to the US, where in 1958, he launched America's first satellite. He was director of NASA and the U.S. guided missile program. His name was Wernher von Braun. Founder of the National Space Institute, Wernher von Braun stated: "The laws of nature that enable us to fly to the Moon also enable us to destroy our home planet with the atom bomb. Science itself does not address the question whether we should use the power at our disposal for good or for evil. The guidelines of what we ought to do are furnished in the moral law of God." Wernher von Braun continued: "It is no longer enough that we pray that God may be with us on our side. We must learn to pray that we may be on God's side." To the California State Board of Education, September 14, 1972, Wernher von Braun wrote: "Some...challenge science to prove the existence of God. But must we light a candle to see the sun?" In American Weekly, February 10, 1963, Wernher von Braun wrote: "It is difficult for me to understand a scientist who does not acknowledge the presence of a superior rationality behind the existence of the universe...Viewing the awesome reaches of space...should only confirm our belief in the certainty of its Creator."

DAY 22 - DAILY BIBLE VERSE (SALVATION) - JUNE 15, 2011

June 15

Psalm 98:2 (NIV)

The LORD has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations.

DAY 22 - DAILY PRAYER (SALVATION OF OTHERS) - JUNE 15, 2011

June 15

A Prayer for Salvation in Behalf of Others
Father, I come before You in prayer and in faith, believing. Your Word says that You desire all men to be saved and come into the knowledge of the truth, so I bring _______________ (name) before You this day.

I break the power of Satan from his assignments and activities in _______________'s life in the Name of Jesus. Now, while Satan is bound, I ask that You send forth the perfect laborers to share the good news of the gospel in such a way that he (she) will listen and understand it. As the truth is ministered, I believe _______________ will come to his (her) senses and come out of the snare of the devil and make Jesus the Lord of his (her) life.

Father, I ask that You fill _______________ with the knowledge of Your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. As I intercede in his (her) behalf, I believe that the power of the Holy Spirit is activated and from this moment on, I shall praise and thank You for _______________'s salvation. I am confident that You are alert and active, watching over Your Word to perform it. It will not return to You void. It will accomplish that which You please and prosper in the thing whereto it was sent.

Therefore, my confession of faith is, "God has begun a good work in _______________'s life and He will perform it and bring it to full completion until the day of Jesus Christ, in Jesus' Name."

Amen.

DAY 22 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 15, 2011

American Minute for June 15th:

The Legend of Robin Hood speaks of Richard the Lionheart, so named for his courage in leading the Third Crusade in 1190AD to win back Jerusalem from the Muslims. Jerusalem had been taken from Byzantine Christian and Jewish inhabitants by Caliph Umar's bloody siege in 638AD. Though he did not retake Jerusalem, Richard made a truce with Saladin in 1192 AD for safe passage of religious pilgrims. When approximately 15,000 inhabitants of Jerusalem could not afford ransome, Saladin sold them into slavery. On Richard's return trip to England, he was captured by rival Duke Leopold of Austria, and spent three years in prison. Legend has it Richard's loyal minstrel, Blondel, traveled from kingdom to kingdom, singing Richard's favorite song and heard Richard sing the second verse from the prison tower. Freed by an enormous "king's ransom," Richard returned to England and took back the throne from his brother John. Five years later Richard died in battle and John ruled oppressively in England. The angry barons captured London and, on JUNE 15, 1215, surrounded King John on the plains of Runnymeade, forcing him to sign the Magna Carta. This was the first time in history the arbitrary powers of a king were limited. The Magna Carta ends: "for the salvation of our souls, and the souls of all our...heirs, and unto the honor of God."

DWIGHT EISENHOWER, JUN. 14, 1954, SIGNED THE BILL
PLACING “ONE NATION UNDER GOD” IN THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE, THEN RECITED ON THE U.S. CAPITOL STEPS:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America,
and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Pledge to the Christian Flag:

I pledge Allegiance to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for whose kingdom it stands, one brotherhood uniting all mankind in service and love.
Pledge to the Bible:

I pledge to the Bible God's Holy word, and will take it as a lamp unto my feet, a light unto my path, and hide it's words in my heart that I may not sin against God.

DAY 21 - DAILY HISTORY - AMERICAN MINUTE FOR JUNE 14, 2011

American Minute for June 14th:

Thirteen Stars and Thirteen Stripes. It was on JUNE 14, 1777, that the Second Continental Congress selected the Flag of the United States. In 1916, Woodrow Wilson signed the Proclamation making JUNE 14 "National Flag Day." On Flag Day, 1942, Franklin D. Roosevelt stated: "The belief in man, created free, in the image of God-is the crucial difference between ourselves and the enemies we face...God of the free...grant us victory over the tyrants who would enslave all free men." On JUNE 14, 1954, Dwight Eisenhower signed Joint Resolution (Public Law 396) adding the phrase "One Nation Under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Eisenhower stated: "From this day forward, the millions of our school children will daily proclaim in every city and town, every village and rural school house, the dedication of our nation and our people to the Almighty. To anyone who truly loves America, nothing could be more inspiring than...this rededication of our youth, on each school morning, to our country's true meaning." President Eisenhower ended: "In this way we are reaffirming the transcendence of religious faith in America's heritage and future; in this way we shall constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country's most powerful resource, in peace or in war."

James Beasley Simpson, Best Quotes of '54, '55, '56 (NY: Thomas Y. Crowell Co., 1957), p. 73. Supreme Court Dismisses Pledge Case on Technicality, Mon. Jun 14, 2004, WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court dismissed on Monday a constitutional challenge to the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance recited by schoolchildren, without deciding the key church-state issue. The justices ruled that California atheist Michael Newdow lacked the legal right to bring the challenge in the first place. "We conclude that Newdow lacks standing," Justice John Paul Stevens declared in the opinion. The ruling came down on the 50th anniversary of the addition of the words "under God" to the pledge. Congress adopted the June 14, 1954, law in an effort to distinguish America's religious values and heritage from those of communism, which is atheistic. June 14, 2004 A Unanimous Supreme Court Vacates Ninth Circuit Court Of Appeals Decision Striking Down "Under God" In The Pledge Of Allegiance WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the United States Supreme Court held, in a unanimous decision, that Michael Newdow, an atheist from California who had challenged the constitutionality of the words "Under God" in the pledge of allegiance, did not have standing to bring his case. The legal effect of the Supreme Court's ruling is to vacate the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decision that struck the words "Under God" from the pledge. Liberty Counsel, a nationwide civil liberties legal defense and education organization headquartered in Orlando, Florida, filed an Amicus Brief at the United States Supreme Court in the case. The Supreme Court decision held that Michael Newdow lacked standing to bring his case because he did not have the legal authority to speak on behalf of his daughter. Mr. Newdow is currently involved in a custody battle with his ex-wife. Justices Rehnquist, Thomas and O'Connor issued a concurring opinion agreeing that Mr. Newdow lacked standing, but also arguing that the phrase "Under God" in the pledge is constitutional. The legal effect of the Supreme Court's ruling is to vacate the Ninth Circuit's earlier decision holding the pledge to be unconstitutional. After today's ruling, it is as if Mr. Newdow had never brought his case in the courts. Prior to today's ruling by the Supreme Court, schoolchildren in states covered by the Ninth Circuit (Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon and Washington) were barred from saying the pledge of allegiance with the inclusion of the phrase "Under God." Now, there is no prohibition against saying the entire pledge in those states. Mathew Staver, President and General Counsel of Liberty Counsel, stated, "We are pleased that the effect of the Supreme Court's decision is to uphold the constitutionality of the pledge of allegiance. Schoolchildren in states covered by the Ninth Circuit can now say the entire pledge of allegiance without fear of censorship." Staver continued, "Justices Rehnquist, Thomas and O'Connor are correct that the pledge of allegiance is constitutional. Our history is not complete without God. If "under God" were removed, many history books and founding documents will be in jeopardy, not the least of which is the Declaration of Independence." ### The United States Supreme Court's Opinion will be posted on its web site later today. Read the brief filed by Liberty Counsel before the Supreme Court. Liberty Counsel, headquartered in Orlando, Florida, is a national public interest law firm dedicated to advancing religious freedom, the sanctity of human life and the traditional family. DAY 20 - DAILY PRAYER (LONELINESS) - JUNE 13, 2011

June 13

Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty.
--Mother Teresa of Calcutta quotes (Albanian born Indian Missionary and Founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity. Nobel Prize for Peace in 1979. 1910-1997)

Gracious Father,

Please hear the cry of those who are lonely and empty in America...

For all those who are lonely, and filled with a great emptiness...may You be gracious to them (Psalm 25:16).

For those who are orphaned, may You take them in (Psalm 27:10).

For those who are widowed, may You heal them and bind up their wounds (Psalm 147:3).

For those who have lost hope, show them Your plans to prosper them and give them hope (Jeremiah 29:11).

For those lost in the emptiness of addiction, may You be their constant companion (Isaiah 41:10).

For those who are lonely due to confinement in prisons and jails, may they receive your greatest gift of love (John 3:16).

Come to all those who anguish in loneliness, and fill their emptiness with the love that only You can provide.

In Jesus' name.

Amen!
